November 2009 Kevin and Nick Jacobson were chosen for this year’s Conservation Achievement Award for Dickey County. The Jacobson’s were chosen for this award because of their dedication to the conservation of our natural resources. They will be honored at the North Dakota Association of Soil Conservation Districts convention this month in Bismarck.
The Jacobson’s run a very intense conservation cropping system, practicing minimum tillage on all acres. They also have over 20,000 feet of windbreaks throughout their farming operation. They are very conscious of the need to protect and maintain windbreaks. Each year, hundreds of young trees are planted in areas of shelterbelts that have been damaged by either old age or weather. Because of the Jacobson’s stewardship of the land in Dickey County, the JRSCD board choose to honor them with this award.
Kevin and Nick will be presented with a framed aerial photograph of their farm. A second photograph of their farm will travel around the state in the Soil Conservation Achievement Award Program Exhibit for a year, after which it will be displayed in the James River Soil Conservation District office “Hall of Fame.” Congratulations to the entire Jacobson family – Kevin and Donna, Nick, Cody, Ivy, and Tate.
The North Dakota Soil Conservation Achievement Awards Program is a statewide program where each of the 56 soil conservation districts recognizes farmers and ranchers who have made an outstanding effort to conserve their natural resources. This one of a kind program has been around since 1948.
The award is sponsored by the James River Soil Conservation District, North Dakota Newspaper Association, North Dakota State Soil Conservation Committee, North Dakota State University Extension Service, Natural Resource Conservation Service, Farm Service Agency, the North Dakota Association of Soil Conservation Districts, and individual soil conservation districts in the state.
The James River Soil Conservation District has recently updated their website. Now you can find out about the different services the district provides and their prices. You can read about all the trees that the district sells and print out a tree order form. The website also provides information about the different NRCS cost-share and easement programs, and it includes links to other useful websites. The website address is www.jrscd.nd.nacdnet.org. Check it out!
The James River SCD is currently preparing tree orders for next spring. If you are planning to plant trees next spring, please come into the office to discuss which species you’re interested in planting. The deadline for ordering trees for next year’s planting is February 1, 2010.
Also, starting November 9, the new NRCS District Conservationist will be in the local office. Michelle Jezeski was chosen for the position. Previously, she has worked in offices in Fargo, Bismarck, LaMoure, and Williston. Stop in and say hi! And watch for her story in next month’s conservation corner.
For more information on office activities and programs, contact us at 701-349-3534, ext 3. The NRCS is an equal opportunity provider and employer.
